Psycho Daisies - Welcome to Nowhere
|
Ok gang, you've heard the story already. Johnny Salton leaves the Eggs in the summer of 1984, followed by the implosion of the Eggs in March 1985. Salton reunites with Frosh, Marco and Stix to form the Psycho Daisies, a band that continues to this day.
When I first saw the Psycho Daisies at the Lonesome Coyote in St Pete, I believe it was May 1985, they blew me away. It was the Eggs with slightly less blues and slide, but added psychedelia and Stones-y influence. It was Florida's very own Dream Syndicate or Television, except these guys weren't shy about singing about their nasty habits. Froshnider and Salton had a true, full-on songwriting collaboration in full bloom, and their guitars weaved around each other endlessly. Marco was absolutely solid on bass, and Johnny Stix was one of the best drummers I've seen.
These extremely rare live tracks were sent to me by an old friend of the Daisies named Jean-Luc, who got them from the Daisies back in the day, and was smart enough to keep them. And I was blown away all over again when I heard them. I transferred them to digital, adjusted some of the EQ a bit, and pitch-corrected where necessary. This is a rough-and-ready document of a great band. And with 9 previously-unheard originals, you can get a fairly good idea what a second album by the original lineup would've sounded like, from the introspection of "I Can't Waste No Time" and "An Axe To Grind" to the Bo Diddley rave-up "I Went Walking."
This is crucial documentation of an important band. Charlie Pickett loves it, Karen and I love it, you should probably get one....
